FROM MAN’S BEST FRIEND TO ONE OF THE FAMILY
Pets Play an Increasingly Important Role in Our Lives

Redefining the American Family

Have you noticed recently there are dogs popping up everywhere? Advertisements, magazine covers, celebrity photographs. This is more than coincidence. More time, effort and money are being spent on pets than ever before. The advent of pet psychologists, luxurious kennels and the wide range of pet accessories, ranging from Designer carriers to organic treats, are further evidence of the lengths to which pet owners will go to care for their loved ones. Pets are no longer just an appendage to the American family; they are members of the family unit. Pets, who were once relegated to backyard doghouses are now sleeping in master bedrooms, many with custom made beds of their own.

America has experienced a renewal in family values and pets are part of it. Because of the increased value people place on their pets, they are willing to spend more money than ever before keeping them healthy and happy. As people trend toward very health-conscious lifestyles, focusing on organic and natural products, they are seeking the same quality for their pets. Americans are spending more on premium pet foods and paying for services like pet health insurance. With trends like this the pet industry is virtually recession-proof – people are tightening their belts in this economic downturn, but rarely at the expense of their pets. Total pet spending in the U.S. is estimated to reach more than $31 billion in 2003 (according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, APPMA).

Also according to the APPMA:
• There are at least 68 million pet dogs in the United States
• There are 73 million pet cats in the United States
• 40 million households own at least one dog
• 35 million households own at least one cat

Why a Family pet?

With the growing understanding of the psychological, physiological and emotional benefits that animals offer, the recognized value a pet brings to its owner has increased. Studies continue to show that pets provide medical benefits from lowering blood pressure and lessening anxiety and depression to hastening healing after surgery. Those who own pets tend to have better overall health and go to the doctor less often than those without pets. More empty-nesters find pets to be ideal companions and more children are bringing pets into their homes.

"Just Called to Say I Love You"

According to a survey conducted by the American Animal Hospital Association:
• 63% of pet owners say, "I love you" to their pets at least once daily
• 83% refer to themselves as their pet’s mom or dad
• 59% celebrate their pet’s birthday
• 87% include their pets in holiday celebrations

While many people struggle with expressing their emotions to others, there seems to be no barriers to showering pets with love. This has opened a gap in the marketplace. How do I show my pet I love them? How can my pet say thanks? The answers to these questions are at the heart and soul of one company.

One Company Way Ahead of The Trend

Hunkydory *paper products is a company that got ahead of this trend, because the co-creators, husband and wife, Stephen Shearer and Peggy Dial were already living this lifestyle. Hunkydory was created because of the lack of products available that truly acknowledge the intense bond people have with their pets. Stephen Shearer found no suitable greeting cards that their dogs, cats and goldfish could give to his wife, and their "mother" Peggy Dial that expressed their true feelings on Mother’s Day. The couple decided it was time for the emotions felt by pet owners to be recognized so they created Hunkydory. Hunkydory has answered the growing need to express emotions to and from pets, as well as allow pets to experience "human" events such as birthday parties and playdates.

Hunkydory offers greeting cards, announcements, birthday invitations and gift bags for pet lovers who consider their pets truly members of the family. The signature style is black and white, photojournalistic images illustrating the joys and sorrows to which all pet owners can relate. With the real photos and the sentiments inside that range from humorous to sweet and sad, Hunkydory offers cards for real moments in the pet-human relationship.
